I am loving this series and so are my boys. The video I added has a little history prefacing the actually show. I knew the info before I started watching but it was very cool to find this. Anyway, my oldest son downloaded the opening song and we have it on our ipods now. I really like the "mononoke". He is funny. A good mix of action and funny and a smidge of love. Growing up is hard to do, especially when you have to prove yourself and take care of nasty youkai along the way.

Princess Princess
I just finished this 12 episode series. It wasn't anything outstanding but I found it quite funny at times. What I think is even more amazing is that this was made into a drama. You can find it at youtube under Princess Princess D. I need to find the manga for this. Anyway, a boy goes off to an all boys school and sees a pretty girl there. Later in his dorm he is put into the P-Room. He didn't know it was the room for the school princesses. Hummmm....although shocked at what he asked to do he does it quite easily. What is his job? Watch and see.

Lucky Star
lol..oh. my. God. This has to be the best opening I have EVER seen. Flipping hilarious! My oldest son says it makes his ears bleed...lol. My youngest son likes this show..very, very odd since he is 8. He doesn't like the lucky channel bit in the middle though. You will either like this or hate it I think. It is just a slice of life anime. These girls and what they talk about everyday. I like it when they go karaoke. We all really sing that badly don't we? There isn't any action unless it is on their video games screens. Some people might find this boring. I added the opening and a bit of the first episode. I read the subtitles to my son. Try doing that with this opening. I think I stopped breathing!

Saiunkoku Monogatari
From Anime News Network: Plot Summary: Saiunkoku is a world of eight provinces or houses, each named after a different colour. The new Emperor, Shi Ryuuki, has gained for a reputation for being uninterested in courtly matters and for flaunting his love for men. Shuurei, although born of the important Kou family, has difficulty making ends meet. She easily accepts an invitation to be the Emperor's concubine in order to turn him into a good ruler. The mysterious Seiran, a young man who was adopted by her father, goes with her as Ryuuki's bodyguard. Entering the imperial palace revives Shuurei's dream of being a court official, and, together with the many companions she meets along the way, continues moving bravely forward while trying to fend off the Emperor's advances.
This summery doesn't seem to do it justice. I am really looking forward to watching this series. I kinda stumbled upon it. My oldest son downloaded the opening theme. I find it pretty. When he watched the first episode he laughed at me and said it kind of reminded him of Fushigi Yuugi and I would be crying all over again. I hope this isn't the case. My youngest son and I were a blubbering mess after FY. I couldn't find a whole first episode so here is the lovely opening. Enjoy.

Lovely Complex/Love.Com
My son and I are almost finished watching this series. I am also getting the live action movie. I tried getting this sample from youtube because it fits better on the blog but they didn't have any. They do have the movie in bits there. I got this from Veoh. Anyway, tall girl, short boy...can they be a couple? This is really a funny series. Some of their facial expressions just make me and my son burst out laughing. I needed some funny in my life. My God though Otani is dense. You really want to stangle him for not noticing anything. Oh well...I recommend this...I know we have had a blast watching it. I hope the movie is good too.

Kyou Kara Maou!/ God! Save our King!
Ok, you are being bullied and getting a swirly. The next thing you know your being sucked down a toilet and find yourself in a whole new world. It looks like your in Germany and people are saying you are the next heir to the throne. Shock enough right? So some guy you don't know says your unfit and badmouths your mother so you slap the guy. Whoops. In this world getting slapped in the face is a marriage proposal. Now you have a GUY as a fiancee and are surrounded by "demons" and humans living in not so much harmony..more like, war. What do you do? There are two seasons of this and the third is airing in Japan now.

Angel Heart
Long time no blog. Sorry about that, real life gets in the way of my happy passions..:) That said...Angel Heart, I am going to add a link to the review from wikipedia for those looking for a more in depth review. For City Hunter fans you might not like this. I am used to alternate universes and elseworld tales so I just try and take it and enjoy it for itself. This is the story of an assassin who after her 50th kill can no longer live with the guilt and attempts suicide. Another woman saves a child but dies in the process leaving her organs for donation. The assassin aka Glass Heart receives her heart and is forced to keep killing. However, she keeps seeing the images of those she has killed as well as images from her heart donor. She seeks out the donors husband (City Hunter) and he takes her in. I think the manga is still ongoing but don't quote me on that. Enjoy the preview here....what do you think of the art work in this?

Witch Hunter Robin
My boys really liked this series. It is a bit older and probably everyone has heard of it but I wanted to mention it since it was something we liked. My oldest liked the music and we all loved the episode with the artist girl. They still quote her. I liked the way it touched upon discrimination and fears of the unknown. To be hunted and persecuted because of how you were born is tragic. It certainly spured some discussion here.

Vampire Knight
I have been waiting for this anime to come out for a while. I know some people aren't thrilled with the manga but I like it. This will be interesting to see how it compares with the manga.

Wallflower/Perfect Girl Evolution
Ok. The manga is better. Read it. That said, this is still really funny. If you like pretty boys mixed with horror. Sunako confesses her love and is horribly rejected. From then on she takes little care of herself and indulges in her love of horror films and her closest friend is a skull and anatomical dummy she keeps with her. Enter her wealthy aunt. She asks four attractive guys to take on the task of making Sunako a lady or they will be kicked out of the house. They have been living in the aunts home. They agree not knowing how hard the task would be (and not knowing of the earlier rejection. In the anime if they fail they have to pay triple rent instead. Sunako also gets nosebleeds when she sees a cute guy. She is a great cook but very creepy. I found the trailer for this which is quite odd. I also added the first part of the first episode for you to check out. The guys eyes are a bit large but in the manga it was worse. It was the one complaint I had for the manga. It wasn't my favorite art. The moral to the story? Well, beauty in what's inside. Growing up and dealing with life stuff.

Seirei No Moribito - Guardian of the Sacred Spirit
This is so under rated! It seems more like a movie than a series. I heard it was going to be on cartoon network but I haven't checked the site to verify that yet. I am in the mood today for strong women. This is it. I wonder what it would be like to be a female bodyguard? If you are in the mood for a great plot, a strong female lead and great art and music (Hyde!), check this out.

Fooly Cooly
This anime is either you get it or you don't. You love it or hate it.
I love it. It seems random but a lot of times isn't. The creativity. The way it spoofs itself and anime/manga in general. You have to see it to believe it. The soundtrack by the Pillows is great and just fits. I really like Takun and I even like Haruko even though she is in my opinion selfish and can be quite ruthless. Growing up is tough. Even more so with stuff coming out of your forehead and an alien maid. Guitars and Vespas. Scandals and pulpy juice. Robots and space pirates. Being left behind and forgotten. Intertesting enough?

A Little Snow Fairy Sugar
This is a cute and wonderful anime. My son loved it when he was six. He would dance and cry and laugh. We bought the manga after we watched the series and it was a great tool getting him into reading. This is the first part of the first episode. I was sad at the end and won't tell you why since I don't want to spoil it for you. You see the girl in this series grow up a lot as well as the fairies. The themes of friendship and learning about yourself and having confidence and working hard were all great lessons. It is also pretty and I love cute stuff. The fairies are definitely cute. My son obviously liked the boy fairies. For all ages. My son even has the theme song on his mp3 player.

Vision of Escaflowne
This was the first anime my boys ever saw, Then Pokemon hit and it was all downhill from there for the kids...:) Anyway, although this has a lot of romance in it and could be considered shoujo in a lot of ways it also has..dragons...mechs...swords..knight and princesses...war....evil villains...and a cat girl. Something for the boys out there. I LOVE Van. I would love to use that name. I like the anime series a lot. Not the one shown briefly on fox because of the editing. Fox was the way we first saw it though. Then I went out and found the dubbed version. The movie was ok but too condensed. There is so much going on in the story you do want to miss anything. The manga, well, there are two different versions. One more shoujo one more shonen. I am reading the shonen version right now and Van is more of a brat with a foul mouth to boot. It is funny though to read it when you are used to the anime. Hitomi is naked a lot in the manga too. Definitely shonen. oh and the best part is Dilandu.....cheek...cheek....cheek.

Gunsmith Cats
Muscle car. Guns. Bomb expert. Private eyes. Car Chases.
This has everything and the ones who do it all are Rally and May. Rally is the taller brunette and May the short blond. I swear I thought I was going to name my daughter Rally May for years. The art seems old now but the music is fun and the pace fast. The girls are tough and thereis nothing like coming home to a home full of grenade booby traps. It is violent. It is bloody. It is however a standard of 10 years ago so nothing like the stuff we see today. I have the series opening and a trailer. Enjoy!

Ouran High School Host Club
Eeeeeee! It's Host Club! I love this SO much. Shojo at it's funniest. This is not dark or sad at all really. There are small life lessons here and there. Tamaki's grandmother is a "hag" according to my eight year old son. Meany. She is truly awful. OK quick summery. Take a elite high school for the very wealthy, add a poor scholarship student, mix with an all male host club and add a dash of ambiguous female and you have a laugh fest. This is just the first part of episode one. SEE the whole thing. I am still collecting the manga but the anime was enjoyable. Let me just say this about the first episode. I felt as dense as pound cake the first time I watched it. There are always things when you are watching anime as an outsider to Japanese culture that just go over your head and you just go with the flow and just enjoy. If you have a great dub then a lot is explained. You hear a lot about how British humor for example is dry or odd. Personally I love it but the same can be said for understanding any other culture. So I felt like a dummy when as the host club members began to figure out Haruhi was really a girl a little light bulb would appear over their heads. Can you believe I didn't get it? I just saw the light bulbs but never connected it was because they had figured it out. DUH. Oh well, I am just going to assume most of you know what host club is. If not they do explain it. My sons dressed up for a con last summer as Nekozawa and Hunny. My eight year old was Hunny. He was the perfect height and had the right color hair so he didn't need a wig. We did buy a bun bun though. Cons are so fun. It's a social acceptable excuse to dress like it's Halloween at other times of the year.

Gokusen
Gokusen! I love this anime. I felt so stupid when I saw this the first time. I actually saw it on tv. It is rare I find something I really like from tv. I would have to say things I saw on tv first that I really liked were Inuyasha ( I loved the voice actors), Trigun (made me laugh then cry like a baby) then Gokusen. Now it has some nasty language in parts. More than Inuyasha favorite fight phrase of "You B*****d!". Of course it all makes sense when you realize it has yakuza and juvenile delinquints in it. Still, it's funny. The bonds between friends is enjoyable to watch. The way the teacher works so hard for her students to get them to graduate make you wish all teachers were so devoted. If you like the anime read the manga. It is longer and has much more plot. There is also a live action drama. the actors in it are amazing and how DO they find people who look so much like the characters? If anyone is interested I have links for the manga that is being scanlated. The drama can be found on youtube and rented on greencine. Dunno if the rentals have subtitals though. FIGHT-O!

Kanon
If you like a real tear jerker...watch. this. anime. It's awsome really. Just make sure you see the 2006 version. The art is better and the story is more fleshed out with more episodes then the 2002 version. If anyone has seen Air then this is for you.

Chibi Vampire Karin
As you can see from this opening it this about a vampire. The opening does have a low of flash nude shots which reminds me of the earlier topic about nudity. Cute nude vampire girl who makes blood instead of taking it. Mostly. Anyway, it is fanservice for certain..male fans. The opening anyway. The story is a bit more than that though. Both the anime and manga uses Karin's vampirism as an allegory for growing up and that entails. It has a lot of cute stuff as well. Don't let the nudity in the opening discourage you. Do any of you like the song?

Warning
So, I added some more stuff. I was checking out the video bar and whoa...some wild stuff. Now when I added it I just wnt in a typed for catagory anime and this is the selection that came up. I did NOT pick the video samples. I am going to try and figure out how to add just one clip at a time instead of a random sample so it will more suitable to our tastes. I kinda wanted random stuff though just to se what's out there and maybe fin something I might like too.:) So, for now I will leave the bar up and work on getting something not so....eewww.

New Stuff
I am adding new stuff all the time recently. I added a new video bar linked to you tube to cruise for something new to watch in Anime. I also added a link to my own store at the top. Any time anyone gets the urge to buy something from amazon related to manga or anime please think of me first *smile*. There a few more ads and stuff and I know it can be a drag but click them and help a poor family out *rattles tip cup*. Anyway, I was thinking about a new topic and it hit me. Duh. Fanfiction. How many of you read them? I do. I have for about 5 years now. I am always blown away by how much is out there related to anime and manga. How does a grown woman get sucked into something seemingly so, well...add your own description here. I actually stumbled upon it when I was searching for original fiction. I like reading things by unpublished authors and if I am lucky, over time see their skills improve and even see some become published. It is like watching your own child grow. *sniff* Some stuff out there is really and I mean REALLY horrid. Some is just an excuse to write porn. BE SELECTIVE. Most big sites have a rating system that helps. If you have a kid who is surfing for that kinda stuff, rating or not you can read the nasty stuff real easy. I try and read everything my kids do or at least try. So I have quite an age range from the alphabet to high school. I am thinking I may add some links to some of the stuff i am reading but that may wait for a bit. How to find time to read that when your favorite manga is out there is not easy. What soothes the pain is the fact that it's FREE. When you are waiting for the the next release you can just go online and find a story and pretend it's an elseworlds kind of tale. Even better, write something yourself and practice your rusty writing skills if you are old like me or keep them sharp and improve if you are a numericly challanged person (either up or down on the number scale). Let's see if anyone can post their favorite fanfiction sites before I do....please...:)

BTW
Check out the what we read and watch stuff on the side. Are there any you may not have heard of or want to check out? Let me know and can post links or give a description.
I read it for the art.....:)
Yippie! I finally got some responses..:) Ok, let's hear about what you like to read and watch. So, how many of you are into anime or manga for the story content or the art? I was discussing this with someone the other day and was asked, "Do you really consider graphic novels art?" Well, short answer is yes. It is isn't it? That doesn't mean everything is good of course. There are different styles just like anything else. Everyone has their own tastes. I like surfing and downloading scans in the raw which you wouldn't get here in the states and finding someone to follow. Watching how they grow as artists. I feel the same way about story lines. Finding little one shots and seeing all the different stories. Sometimes I finish a story even though the art makes me cringe. Other times I like just enjoying the art even though the story is very generic. When you find both that is a bonus. I have a new poll so don't forget to check it out and let's have a real debate. Any ideas for other topics would be great too!

Debate Topic One - Nudity
Ok, Let's start off with a good one! Anime and Manga can be for all ages. It seems though that it can be hard for the diligent parent to find anything that doesn't have some form of nudity in it. If not showing nudity than many references to being naked. Is it just our American morals that has the problem? Are we not enlightned enough? It seems sometimes it is hard to enjoy the plots and artwork over the "other stuff". Now, I personally like watching how artists grow and change. Sometimes, it seems to take over and plot suffers. To find something that has both in a balanced way is a barrel shoot. Violence also can be in the front lines that seems to me quite attractive to the younger set, although no more so than any tv movie or video game. There is a HUGE amount to choose from and that is the positive thing. I think the American market has less choice and as such the things that are marketed here first may have more sex and violence in order to get their pages in the door here. I find a ton of cute stuff online. On the other end of the spectrum though is the fact I have also found a LOT of stuff that made me go, "oh my God, did I just read that?" I mean actual drawn out sex. Maybe, growing up on Batman and X-Men I wasn't prepared to see a high school girl bullied so bad that it resulted in such a thing in a "comic genre". I will say though, I would have recommended the story to my son who is 15. The story was amazing. The art was just ok but the the tale of how this kid came out of severe abuse from so called friends and went from not coming to school to graduating and finding a source of strength was inspirational. It was just those two sceens that made me hesitate. It was just to graphic for me. The visual medium has much more impact. I was speechless. Is that a bad thing? Maybe not at first but then the risk of becoming no longer shocked at such things can be a sad result. Although in the story I mentioned it seemed to fit there are other things I have seen that made no sense what so ever to plot other than "let's see her naked already!" I saw one anime where a female assassin was chasing her helpless male victim through the woods. She became enraged at his running away (can't imagine why) so she stops....rips off her clothes...and hunts him down again. *stunned silence* After a few seconds all you could do was laugh. It was so SENSELESS. The idea that it would HELP her in the pursuit was moot. You would think a nice sports bra would have been of more use. Then if she used it to strangle him AFTER she caught him then MAYBE I could say...ok I gueeesss I can see the reason for taking off your bra....:) Thoughts?
For my Boys....:)
ok, then. This is my second blog. I thought this would just be pure fun. This is for me and my boys to share with....?.....about all the fun stuff we like...mostly centered on manga and anime ...art related things and writings as well. Let me just say we love the DVR feature on our Dish. With work and school staying up late to watch the latest anime is just out of the question. Although we do stay up late (in my case try to) on saturdays watching the animes and making japanese dishes and getting into heated talks about this and that. I am going to try and make this a fun place to hang out and touch base for us when things get crazy..:)
